It is important that you identify the type of chest pain which comes in a heart attack or what doctors refer to as Myocardial infarction that needs immediate attention as the time you lose is also an indication of the cardiac muscle you lose due to the thrombus( blood clot) totally occluding the blood supply to an area of cardiac muscle. Therefore the more time you lose in getting medical attention will widen the area of muscle which is going to die due to the lack of blood supply for the hearts function.

What we often see in wards is that many people with a heart attack presents late to the hospital. When asked as to why they get late to get to the closest hospital many will say that they didnt know that it was a heart attack. While doctors have ways of confirming a heart attack one important way is through the symptoms or the type of chest pain that you get when you have a heart attack .

If you have a severe chest pain at rest lasting for more than 20 minutes, constricting in nature, associated with palpitations ( awareness of the heart pounding fast) ,difficulty in breathing, sweating, nausea , vomiting , dizziness etc. you might be having a heart attack ! …Chest pain that is associated with pain radiating to the left arm or more characteristically to the neck and jaw are very important symptoms that need immediate attention. Sometimes people with Diabetes mellitus or the elderly might have atypical features such as fatigue, difficulty in breathing or faintishness. If you are already a diagnosed patient with angina worsening of anginal symptoms also need  immediate attention.

When you get a chest pain in a similar fashion you have to get to the closest hospital. It is important that you calm yourself down as fear and panic can increase the heart rate and worsen the attack further. While on the way if you are already on aspirin you can chew a tablet of aspirin or if you are advised to take GTN you can keep a tablet under the tongue (sublingual) however if you are not on regular aspirin you have to be cautious before taking aspirin. Please note that Aspirin will only give a temporary relief.

Get to the Hospital AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if possible  with someone who knows about the attack you got and about your past medical history in case you are unable to speak up. It is also important to be cooperative towards the doctors and the medical personnel, inform about the drugs and how much you have taken to relieve the pain (aspirin or GTN), any diseases you have been diagnosed with or if you are on any long term drugs.Be aware of the treatment given to you for the heart attack especially the medications and procedures done and it is also important to inform the doctor or someone nearby immediately if you have any change of symptoms while on treatment for the heart attack.

Heart attack ( Myocardial infarction) is a leading cause of death and is the number one cause of death in Sri lanka. There are many risk factors for developing heart attacks.

Yes obesity is a risk factor for many health conditions such as Diabetes, cardio vascular diseases, hypercholesterolaemia so the list continues. The most important thing is that this is a risk factor that is avoidable!
